To excel in this role, you will be comfortable switching between strategic planning and tactical execution. You'll need solid business savvy, but your people skills will be just as important -- you should be proactive about establishing relationships quickly with internal team members in our matrixed organization, including both corporate contacts and area groups such as operations, finance, HR and others.

You'll also need to develop a robust network of external stakeholders and influencers. As you will work with a broad spectrum of people -- from owners of acquisition targets to accountants to legal counsel to city council members -- you should be able to adapt your messaging and communication style appropriately. You should be as comfortable in the board room of a large corporation as you are meeting with the owner of a small rural solid waste company, and able to relate to what is important for each audience. You'll need to be able to influence and motivate without formal authority.

We know there will be a learning curve as you get to know a complex industry and multiple markets. Your overall success will be demonstrated by your ability to execute development projects and acquisitions. In addition, within your first year, we will expect you to:
  • Challenge the status quo as relates to existing market strategies.
  • Be proactive about learning quickly so you can identify the strategic levers that need to be pulled in order to grow your Area and make it more profitable.
  • Execute acquisitions or be guided through them by our corporate team, depending on your background.
  • Earn the respect of team members and receive positive feedback on your assimilation into the team and contribution to team goals.
