Your official title will be Area Director, Business Development. You'll report to the Area President (who manages a billion-dollar P&L) and have a dotted line relationship with the Vice President, Market Planning and Development. In addition, you'll partner with a number of internal and external stakeholders, both in our corporate office and in your assigned Area, such as the Directors of Finance, Operations and HR.
The role has two primary objectives:
- Facilitating the development and execution of market growth strategy
- Facilitating the development of solid waste infrastructure through acquisitions, divestitures, privatizations and organic development.
You will collaborate with the local business units, the area leadership team, and Corporate functions to enable Republic Services to win in the marketplace. External relationships will also be important, and you'll interact with business owners (i.e. acquisition targets), public officials and vendors such as lawyers and engineering firms.

Your responsibilities will fall into three main areas.
Mergers, Acquisitions & Divestitures
- Developing a pipeline of acquisition targets and managing relationships with potential sellers.
- Responsibility for analysis of the transaction and business case package preparation.
- Leading transaction negotiations.
- Working closely with the Area President and General Managers to identify and execute business development transactions, including due diligence, coordination of the closing and integration processes.
Market Planning

- Facilitating integrated strategic planning process within the Area, including coordinating with other functional owners.
- Coordinating with market operational leaders to ensure the execution of action plans for strategic development.
Project Management
- Evaluating business justification for the development of new solid waste infrastructure projects, such as recycling centers, transfer stations and landfills, and managing projects through the development cycle.
- Developing project strategies and milestones.
- Leading and motivating internal and external functional expert teams to ensure timely and cost-effective completion of projects.
- Leading annual landfill review and deeming process within Area.
- Supporting municipal infrastructure privatizations within Area.
- Overseeing real estate transactions.
You will be based in our Area office in Crestwood, IL, where you can build strong relationships with your functional counterparts, and support a multi-state, Midwest area including Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. You'll need to be willing and able to travel approximately 30% of the time, on average, but travel will ebb and flow depending on the demand and stage of the opportunities you're pursuing. During the Covid-19 pandemic, travel requirements will be far more limited.
